Domain Names

Every single time you use the Internet, you see domain names. But do you know what they really are? Often, people confuse domain names with Web addresses, and the two are not always one and the same.

All Web sites, every single one of them, have domain names. These domain names are present in the formal Web address (the mess beginning with http that you type into your Internet browser to look at online pages), and that’s from where most of the confusion springs.

So, what is a domain name, then? Let’s say you sign up to get a free Web site with Bravehost. This site, like many others on the Internet, allows people to create their own Web pages using the Bravehost domain. This means that if you name your site My Stuff, your formal Web address will be something like this: http://www.bravenet.com/mystuff/firstpage.html. Your site may be called My Stuff, but that site is still on the Bravehost domain, so the Web address reflects this.

A domain name is the title assigned to sites on the Web. Every page belonging to this domain will contain the name; you see this all the time with sites like Google and Yahoo. All pages on the Internet are part of someone’s domain.
